MUA Industry Divisions
The MUA covers a number of divisions in the maritime industry. Accordingly, the MUA organises its membership by these divisions: ShippingAustralia has an enormous task in terms of its shipping requirements and has one of the largest coastlines in the world, and its imports and exports to the tune of 98% are required to be transported by ships in and out of the country. StevedoringAround 6,000 MUA stevedoring workers are employed at 38 ports, nationwide. They work round the clock, seven days a week up the giant portainer cranes lifting boxes on and off the ships, on straddles forklifts, front end loaders and gantry cranes shifting and stacking boxes, driving forklifts, on deck lashing cargo or operating shipıs gear, down the hatch, in computer towers and grain gantries and on the ground. Port ServicesAustralia's commercial shipping ports are serviced by a large fleet of harbour tugs that not only insure safe passage into Australia's ports but also provide the capability of responding to Maritime accidents including oil spills and ship groundings. HydrocarbonsThe Australian Offshore & Gas Industry is located in Bass Strait Victoria, the Northwest Shelf in Western Australia and Timor Sea off Northern Territory. Australia is fortunate in having a large offshore oil & gas industry, one that is destined to grow enormously over the next few years as other fields come on line. DivingThe Maritime Union of Australia has constitutional coverage for Occupational and Recreational Diving throughout Australia. |
