Green Bans

Uranium exports, French nuclear testing in the Pacific, the destruction of the world's rain forests, dumping of toxic waste, substandard shipping and pollution of our marine life, you name it,the Maritime Union has taken a stand...

But the number one issue for Australian environmentalists at the moment is the Government's plan to allow sub standard, Flag of Convenience shipping on our coast.

These vessels already carry most of our exports. Coming in and out of Australian ports is bad enough. Hugging our coastline is another matter.

FOC vessels are responsible for the majority of major shipping collisions and for a disproportionate volume of maritime pollution. FOC operators also hold the dubious record of six of the 10 worst ship losses. Large scale and dramatic marine pollution by tankers is not just limited to accidents. Substandard ships discharge ballast water from the engine rooms or deliberately discharge chemical wastes into our oceans.
