ITF campaigns to close Tongan register

The ITF is pressuring the South Pacific island of Tonga to honour its agreement to shut down its now infamous shipping register

Tonga should close its shipping register immediately after controversy over ongoing detentions and allegations that Tongan flagged ships have links to the terrorist group Al Qaeda, ITF NewsOnline reports.

In a letter to the Tongan prime minister, ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said he welcomed the decision to shut down the country's flag of convenience. But Cockroft stressed that as a sovereign flag state, under international law the Tongan government is not, as it claims, contractually bound to keep it open for five years. The register should therefore be closed immediately.
