Stop John Howard sinking Australian shipping

By MUA Shipping Division

National unions join forces to stop John Howard sinking Australian shipping.

THE Maritime Union, the CFMEU Mining and Energy Division and the Australian Institute of Marine and Power Engineers have launched a $300,000 advertisement campaign in major dailies and key marginals in the lead up to the federal election. The first ads appeared today.

"The irony of the Liberals having PM John Howard as a captain of the good ship Australia charting its way through turbulent seas at its campaign launch last Sunday, has not escaped maritime workers," said National Secretary Paddy Crumlin. "We've lost more Australian ships to the federal government policy of deregulating our coast than we did to the Japanese during the war. While we lost a dozen ships to the Japanese off the coast and one in 8 seafarers were killed, 20 ships have disappeared since the Howard Government came to office -- all because of their policy of allowing foreign flag ships with guest workers to carry our domestic cargo. They turn away refugees on the Tampa to win public support on one hand but allow in foreign vessels and foreign crew on the other."

Tony Maher said the demise of Australia's shipping industry under the Howard Government is a major concern for all Australians: "Australian workers are losing jobs, our coastal environment is threatened by sub-standard foreign vessels while the country loses millions of dollars in tax as foreign shipowners and foreign crews pay no tax. It's a disgrace that the Howard Government; has presided over this scandal and it must be stopped now."

The $300,000 ad campaign is being run in conjunction with Slick surf and beach protests in key marginals and at Bondi Beach this Saturday, $20 million in $20 bills as phoney as the Liberals election promises and letter boxing campaign in the marginals. It also features a poster "He's out to sink us", bumper stickers Our Coast, Our cargo, Our Ships and leaflets which miners and maritime workers will be handing out in the marginals and at polling booths.
