MUA/ILWU Sydney solidarityBy MUA news
Sydney Branch gives a determined pledge of solidarity and support in the struggle for a new contract for ILWU longshore workers In his letter to ILWU officials and locals, Sydney Branch Secretary Warren Smith highlighted the common MUA/ILWU demand for safer jobs and community engagement. "Too many longshoremen and wharfies are killed on the job each year and this demand is fundamental to the security of workers on the waterfront and their families," he said. "We admire and support your constant attention to the best interests of the community. , Environmentally friendly ports and attacking hazardous emissions is a great initiative." The Sydney Branch Committee recently passed a resolution in support of the ILWU pledging maritime workers would come to ILWU aid. "We will never forget the part the ILWU played in the 1998 Patrick waterfront dispute and we pledge our solidarity and support today and always. An injury to one is an injury to all." Meanwhile Patrick Port Botany delegate Paul Keating reports ILWU solidarity banners have been placed on ship gangways, tea rooms, first aid and breezeways where "ship agents and management can't miss them."
