Petition against Burmese juntaBy MUA campaigns
Unions condemn military junta repression in Burma The Maritime Union has joined the ACTU, the ITF and the international community in condemning the violent repression of peaceful protests by Buddhist monks and workersin Burma. The ITF's Burmese affiliate, the Seafarers' Union of Burma (SUB), has pledged full backing for the "people's demonstration" and their fight for "democracy, freedom and peace". SUB also called for an immediate end to the violence and expressed deep concern "about the fact that a handful of military junta is now using force and resorting to illegal violent crackdowns against legitimate organising and protest, which resulted in the killing of at least four people and many injuries." The International Trade Union Confederation and other global unions have also joined in the condemnation of the violence and called for union protest action. "We have all watched the military crackdown and the killing of innocent people peacefully demonstrating in the streets," said MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin. "This union condemns this attack on working people and stands by our Burmese comrades in the defence of democracy. We are urging all members to join protests against the military junta in coming weeks." Meanwhile members can sign a petition calling on Burma's powerful ally China and the UN security council to step in and pressure Burma's rulers to stop the killing. The petition is being advertised in newspapers around the world. It will be delivered to the UN secretary general, and broadcast to the Burmese people by radio.
