The Hungry Mile

A scene from the film

This classic fifties production by the original union film unit is now a distinguished documentary classic which took out international awards in its time. The hungry mile was the distance men walked along the harbour in search of a job in the thirties and forties. This film draws on the talent of New Theatre, then housed in the union rooms, waterside workers and pensioners to create a dramatic depiction of their industrial conflicts and working conditions. It is one of 13 films produced by the union film unit at the time available as a compilation on both DVD and VHS by emailing muano@mua.org.au

Fighting Films, a book by Lisa Milner on the history of the Waterside Workers Federation Film Unit can also be ordered by email.
